About Our Founder
Our director, Betty A. Hallenbeck, Ph.D., has been in the field for 40 years. As the parent of young adults with disabilities, she understands and has deep compassion for the experiences families working with the special education system. Betty has worked in a wide variety of school settings, taught at colleges and universities, worked for several nonprofits, and volunteered with disability related organizations.
Betty has been delivering undergraduate, graduate, and in-service teacher education for nearly 40 years. She designs workshops to meet the unique needs of individual schools and school districts. Whether your district is looking for a one time workshop or ongoing training for your staff, ACTS for Special Education can help.
Betty listens carefully to parents and students. She is a determined and creative advocate. Betty enjoys helping families become informed, active participants in the special education system. She has in-depth knowledge of laws, policies, and procedures governing special education.
When parents are presented with decisions regarding their child or teen with special needs, Betty explains their rights and options so they can make the best choices for their child. When students with special needs graduate from high school, it can be difficult to know how to get support and what sorts of opportunities are available. Betty shares resources and tools to help parents choose the post-high school and/or college support programs that best align with their teen's needs.
